How to Monetize Your App with Google AdMob (Part 3)

Welcome to the third and final part of our Income Guide series! Over the last two articles, we covered the foundation of creating a solid digital asset. We discussed how to build a simple utility app, run it through closed testing to squash bugs (Part 1), and use App Store Optimization (ASO) to get it ranking high in the search results (Part 2).

Now, it is time for the most exciting part: turning those downloads into actual, daily passive income.

If your app is completely free to download, how exactly does the money end up in your bank account? The answer lies in mobile advertising, and the king of mobile ads is Google AdMob.

What is Google AdMob?

If you are familiar with Google AdSense for websites, AdMob is simply the exact same concept, but built specifically for mobile applications. Millions of advertisers pay Google to show their products to people. Google uses your app as a billboard to show those ads, and in return, they give you a cut of the money.

The beauty of AdMob is that it handles everything automatically. You don't have to go out and find advertisers; you just place a small piece of code in your app, and Google does the rest.

Choosing the Right Ad Formats

To make good money without making your users angry, you have to choose the right type of ads. Here are the three main options:

  • Banner Ads: These are the small, rectangular ads that usually sit quietly at the very bottom or top of the screen. They don't pay a huge amount per click, but because they remain on the screen while the user navigates the app, they generate a steady, consistent stream of impressions.

  • Interstitial Ads: These are full-screen ads that appear at natural transition points. Because they take up the whole screen, advertisers pay significantly more for them.

  • Rewarded Video Ads: Users choose to watch a 30-second video ad in exchange for a reward within the app. This is very popular in games (watch to get an extra life), but it can also work for utility apps!

The Golden Rule: Protect the User Experience

The biggest mistake new developers make is getting greedy. If you flood your app with too many ads, users will get frustrated, leave a 1-star review, and uninstall it.

You have to be strategic. Think about the natural flow of someone using a smart travel packing list. If a massive, unskippable video ad pops up right while they are in the middle of typing "passport" into their list, they will instantly delete the app.

Instead, the smart approach is to place an interstitial ad after they have finished their task. When they hit "Save List" and the app transitions back to the main home screen, that is a natural pause. Showing an ad right there feels organic and doesn't interrupt their thought process.

Alternatively, you could use a rewarded ad format where users watch a short video to unlock premium features, like a pre-made "Winter Vacation Checklist" template.

Your Blueprint for Passive Income

You now have the complete blueprint! It doesn't happen overnight, but building digital real estate is one of the most rewarding ways to earn. Create a genuinely useful app, test it relentlessly before public launch, optimize your store listing with great keywords, and place your AdMob ads thoughtfully.

Once the wheels are in motion, your app can generate revenue while you sleep, travel, or start working on your next big project.

Are you currently working on an app, or do you have an idea waiting to be built? Let's discuss it in the comments below!
